Feeling Guilt and Isolation? What Finally Brought Healing (True Story)

Have you ever faced something so painful that it felt like the world was moving on without you?

You’re not alone.

Did you know:

  • Around 70% of adults worldwide experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime?
  • Over the past three years, 57% of Americans have faced a significant loss?

Despite how common suffering is, when it's happening to you, it can feel like the whole world is moving forward while you’re standing still. Adding feelings of isolation to an already painful experience amplifies that suffering.

A Day That Changed Everything

One brisk, cold afternoon, I was exhausted from a long day at work and 34 weeks pregnant with my second child. I had just picked up my son from daycare when, as we pulled away, he began to scream from the backseat—hungry and impatient. Desperate to soothe him, I leaned over to grab his crackers from the passenger-side floor.

In that split second, everything changed.

Suddenly, I felt a thud. An 18-year-old young woman was on my hood, her body rolling up and hitting the windshield, leaving a dent where her head struck. Time seemed to freeze.

Panic surged through me. What have I done? I thought. Guilt and fear gripped me as I rushed out of the car.

"I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" I pleaded, my heart pounding.

Miraculously, she was okay—no broken bones, no internal injuries. Relief washed over me, but the weight of what happened lingered long after that day.

The Power of Sharing Stories

Years later, as a counselor, I spoke with a client who was drowning in guilt after accidentally causing the loss of a loved one. Even though it had been years since the event, she couldn’t forgive herself and carried the heavy burden of her pain.

I listened and offered professional advice about grief and healing. But none of that seemed to reach her. Finally, I shared my own story—the day I hit the young woman with my car.

While the outcomes of our stories were vastly different, it was my willingness to share my own mistake that resonated with her. In our final session, she said, “It wasn’t the advice you gave me that helped—it was hearing your story.”

Hearing that someone else had made a mistake gave her permission to begin forgiving herself.

We Heal Together

Our stories have power. They break down walls, reconnect us with others, and show us that we are not alone in our pain.

I encourage you to:
1️⃣ Be vulnerable. Open up about your experiences.
2️⃣ Listen to others. There’s healing in hearing someone else’s truth.
3️⃣ Share your own story. You never know how it might help someone else.
